Sugarcane, apples & pears
This coffee has an interesting backstory, as it was explained by Stuart Ritson
who works at Osito (the exporter/importer of this coffee). The PB 14 is a blend
of Huila regional lots that didn't fit into 70kg bags. If Osito buys 500kg of
parchment from the producer, that will yield about 5 and a half 70kg bags of
green coffee. The rest that didn't fit is usually sold by producers on the local
market (often below the cost of production) to avoid exporting weird amounts of
coffee. Osito decided to do things a bit differently here: At the end of milling of
each container, they combine the remaining Screen 15+ coffees (Excelso) into
one lot, as well as all of the Screen 14/Peaberry into another lot. The Malla PB
14 consists of Caturra, Castillo, Colombia and Bourbon varieties/cultivars.
The coffee was brought to our attention by our friend Gerben from Black&Bloom
Groningen. Malla PB 14 is a straightforward sweet & malic cup, notes of
sugarcane, molasses, pears and apples. Great as filter coffee and perfect for
espresso where it delivers a lot sugar-like sweetness to balance the cup.
