The farm is located in the West Valley of Costa Rica, at the foot of the Poas Volcano in an average altitude of 1200 MASL. Hacienda Sonora is run by Alberto Guardia and his son Diego. The farm‘s mill and lands are located next to a 150 years old sugar cane factory. The farm has a rich volcanic soil and the property is almost 100 hectares large. 65 hectares of unshaded coffee an 35 hectares of wild forest. Alberto and Diego produce only natural and honey processed coffees on the farm, thus saving a lot of water during the process. Washed coffee is done only on demant. They plat a lot of arabica varieties and cultivars.

This natural SL28 lot is just fantastic all over the cup. Again, a profile with multiple layers, sweet with lots of thing going on, very winterish. Notes of overripe plums, raisins, star fruit, portokalopita and a hint of brandy.

Their high standards in terms of processing the coffee and controlling the quality of the process demand a lot of work. The farm employs 25 people all year long and up to 140 seasonal workers. They not only pick the ripe coffee cherries, but also turn these high attention lots accordingly during the drying. Our partners at The Coffee Quest are sourcing Alberto‘s coffees regularly and characterize his coffees as fruity and friendly.

Costa Rica has a coffee law 2762, which guarantees an equal distribution of money between the producers. “Fair distribution of coffee returns in Costa Rica starts with the export price. It is onmly when coffee is exported that all stakeholders in the chain know it‘s final value. Then, they start counting backwards to determine what slice of the pie goes to whom.“

Hacienda Sonora is fully self-sufficient in terms of energy thanks to using renewable hydro-power systems and the natural stream running through the Hacienda.
