Kibingo Washing Station in Kayanza works with more than 3,500
smallholder farmers, each cultivating around 300 coffee trees on
an average of just 0.1 hectares. Coffee is the primary source of
income for these families, making quality production essential to
their livelihoods.
Although named Kibingo, the washing station was ultimately built
on the neighboring hills of Kirema and Kinga after the original site
proved inaccessible and local regulations prevented construction
there. The station’s retained name has created a friendly local
rivalry between the surrounding communities, yet producers
continue to work together to deliver some of Burundi’s most
celebrated coffees.
